Nearby residents have concerns about plans for a new Meijer Store

For several years, people living in the northeast part of Fishers, in the area of Southeastern Parkway and Cyntheanne Road, have wanted a grocery store nearby.  Meijer is proposing a grocery at that location, but several residents of the area voiced their opposition to this store in this location.

The Fishers City Council listened to a presentation from representatives of Meijer,  describing the proposed store as smaller than most other locations, such as the facility in Noblesville.  This Meijer would offer only groceries and a pharmacy.

Since this is the first reading of the proposed text amendment, there was no public hearing, but a public hearing will be part of the Plan Commission consideration.  Even though there was no formal public hearing, residents in the area of the proposed grocery voiced their concerns and outright opposition to the project during the Community Comment time at the end of Monday night’s Council session.

Many area residents say traffic is already a problem, with some saying they cannot make a left turn out of their neighborhood now, and this would become impossible with the addition of Meijer.

The next stop for this planned Meijer store is the Planned Unit Development (PUD) Committee to look at the planned elevation levels for the structure July 10, then on that same date the Plan Commission will hold a public hearing and vote on recommended action by the City Council.  The final Council vote is scheduled for July 15.

  1. What’s going on with the land at Cyntheanne and 136th? I haven’t been by there in a while, but it was posted as grocery/gas. It’s inevitable that there will eventually be an exit at I-69 & Cyntheanne. I would think that would be the more desirable location.

  2. I play at Cynthianne a lot and I do enjoy the country setting. With the open land, the School House Cafe, seeing the kids play at the playground and over at the school. So peaceful. It’s like being away from everything but still close to everything. It would be a crying shame to put a Meijer and gas station there. Not to mention the traffic but the trash that those places generate is a tragedy. 🙁
    Thanks for the information Larry.

    1. I think it’s horrible to put that across from a street, welchel, that runs parallel to Southeastern. Obviously, Southeastern is going to have to be widened, whether Meijer goes in there or not. That said, this is smacking of castleton, in the sense of no real overall plan, just stick something where you feel like it. You don’t build homes that back up to a road that you know you’re going to have to enlarge and then put commercial right across from it. Fishers? Do you think you could have an overall plan?

  3. Southeastern was not designed for this type of traffic. It’s also quite literally right next to a school. Who would want to look out of their house to see a Meijer and a gas station? How about a nicer boutique grocery store, or even build another school since we’re busting at the seams. Meijer plays this off as being a smaller neighborhood version of their store. 75,000 square feet isn’t exactly a Mom n’ Pop store. They even said they’re a “family owned business”. Yeah, ok. The 3 owners of Meijer are worth 5.3 billion. They can find another place for a Meijer and earn their next billion there.

  4. I know they will need another school over there but it would be nice if Fishers just took all remaining land and made them nature reserves and parks. We have enough condos, apartments and homes.

  5. I think it’s wonderful to build a Meijer at this location. I live in Britton falls and Fisher is so under for number of grocery stores per # of people, and I’m tired of Kroger raising prices just because they can and have bought up all grocery stories just so they have a monopoly on them. We deserve other stores so I say GO MEIJER!!

  6. This part of Fishers is in desperate need of another grocery store and gas station. Kroger has had a monopoly for decades and their prices are outrageous. It is unfortunate for the homeowners who built homes across the road from the proposed location, but that land has long been zoned for business. They should not have been surprised about the development plan for that land.
