Bicyclists, pedestrians warned to stay away from 146th & Allisonville construction

It is a bit disheartening to see the Hamilton County Highway Department feels there is a need to say this, but it appears local people walking and riding bicycles are using the construction zone at 146th Street & Allisonville Road.  Officials warn local residents of the dangers involved in entering this area.

Below is the full text of the statement issued Wednesday:

=========

 Our field personnel have reported a large number of bicycle and pedestrian traffic within closed construction limits at 146th Street and Allisonville Road. This is an active construction zone where bicycle and  pedestrian traffic is prohibited. Signage indicating “No Pedestrians or Bicycles” has been installed at all ends of the project.

Our goal is to keep our workers, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians safe during construction. Reminding people to be cognizant of their surroundings and obeying the closure limits is of utmost importance. Even with proper PPE that our construction crews are wearing, it could be hazardous. Please keep yourself safe and out of harm’s way by finding an alternate route.

  1. I’m not sure why you see this is disheartening. 146th Street is one of the only ways to get across the river or into Carmel for bikers and runners. I’m actually disheartened that Hamilton county didn’t leave an access means for bikers and walkers/runners to get through that area being that the only other places to go to cross the river is all the way down to 116th Street or in Noblesville.

  2. Hey, it’s also dangerous for us drivers! On the weekend I turned south from going E on146th street to South on Allisonville and was greeted by a car head on by someone that got into the wrong lane further back. Poorly marked if this happens in the early evening. More barriers or a sign painted in the road just past entry to the retirement facility could help.

    1. I saw the exact same thing a couple weeks ago, this time during the morning rush hour and it was one of those landscaping company trucks with a trailer attached. To their credit, they did an expert job backing all the way up, trailer and all, past the dividers to get into the correct lane.

      And then last night I witnessed someone gun it on 146th St as soon as the light turned green to make an illegal left turn onto Allisonville in front of oncoming traffic.
