Battle of Mudsock coming up September 8th

When you look at the quiet, affluent suburban community of Fishers of today, it’s hard to envision the community then called Fishers Station in 1881.  It was known as the Mudsock, because the area was largely a swamp at that time and most people had mud on their socks.

Fishers Station, where the City of Fishers is located now, was known as a rough & tumble place.  The area lived up to its reputation in 1881, where a commotion, or riot (depending on how you look at it) happened and led to a trial.

In 2018, local arts aficionado Ashton Wolf put a number of people together to stage a play and musical of that great battle of the late 19th century in Fishers Station, which made news nation wide.

The production in 2018 was a big hit, so the Battle of Mudsock & the Trial of Hamp West will be brought to local audiences once again with two performances on Sunday, September 8th, 2:00pm & 4:30pm.

Actual public safety personnel from the Fishers Police & Fire Departments will provide some of the acting talent, as they did in 2018.

This will all happen at the historic Ambassador House here in Fishers (10598 Eller Rd, Fishers).  For more information, and ticket information, use this link.   Proceeds go to the Ambassador House and the Fishers Police Foundation.

I recorded a podcast with Ashton Wolf and local historian David Heighway in 2018 before that Mudsock production.  You can listen to that podcast below (just ignore the times and dates mentioned there, but the Web site address is still good)

Pasta Bowl reminder

HSE School Board Member Janet Pritchett holds the 2018 Pasta Bowl trophy awarded to Riverside Intermediate School

Part of the festivities surrounding the annual Mudsock Game, featuring football rivals HSE High School and Fishers HS, is the Pasta Bowl.  This fundraiser centers on collecting pasta for local food banks and other charities providing food to those in need.

Collection boxes will be setup around Fishers and the HSE School District if you choose to donate boxes of pasta.  All the 22 schools in the HSE District will engage in a friendly competition to see which buildings can collect the most boxes of pasta.

A few words about podcasts

I am in my 9th year of writing this news blog and my 4th year of producing local podcasts.  I started the podcasts to give local people 30 minutes or more to talk about what they are doing in the local Fishers community.

I plan on taking a brief time-out on posting podcasts in order to catch-up on other projects I am doing.  But, do not fear, I will be back with more podcasts in about 10 days.

I do plan to invite all candidates to appear on a podcast, if there is more than one person on the ballot for that office in the November Fishers city general election.  I believe there are about 10 candidates that would be invited under that definition.

I have had a number of podcasts posted lately on issues such as the Nickel Plate future (rail and/or trail), the HSE Schools Foundation, local publisher Tom Britt, Indianapolis Business Journal Statehouse reporter Lindsey Erdody, and Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart.  There are many more.

So, as I take a brief respite from podcasting, check out the many podcasts already posted during 2019.  You can check out all those podcasts at this link.

Hannah Baer, a senior at HSE High School, was honored by the Hamilton Southeastern School Board Wednesday night for being a Girl Scout Gold Award winner.  The project that gained her the award related to recruiting a team of volunteers to build an outdoor learning space for children in HSE Preschool of the Natural Sciences at Brooks School Elementary.

Hannah previously completed the Bronze and Silver Awards for Girl Scouts based on her work in the local community.

She plans on double college majors in education & psychology.
